A staple of the folk scene for four decades, 40 Degrees South is an acapella group singing traditional and trad-style folk songs. While mostly known for their repertoire of maritime songs and shanties, they also sing songs of Australian colonial history, songs with industrial themes, gospel songs, and traditional chorus songs. They have performed at festivals around Australia and overseas, including the Connecticut Sea Music and Old Songs Festivals in the USA. The four old geezers – Don Brian, Thomas Hanson, Chris Maltby and Margaret Walters – have recently been joined by the young, redoubtable Jude Alexander.
